What storm damage repair covers

Storm damage on a roof is usually less dramatic than people picture. A hard Santa Ana gust breaks the seal under a row of shingles, a dropped branch cracks some concrete tile, or wind bends back the flashing along a wall. Nothing leaks right away, but the next rain finds the gap.

Our job is to locate those weak spots, repair them so they shed water again, and document everything so you and your insurer are looking at the same facts. If the damage is spread wide, or the roof was close to worn out already, we say so plainly and talk about roof replacement too.

We repair to today's code, not the code in place when your roof was built. On an older home that may mean new underlayment or drip edge where we work. We explain the reason before any of it appears on your estimate.

What the work includes

  1. 01

    A whole-roof check

We walk the entire roof, not just the spot you noticed. Ridge caps, hips, valleys, flashing, vents and the gutter line all get a look, and we check the attic for wet decking or insulation where we can reach it.

  2. 02

A photo record you can share

Every damaged spot is photographed and dated, along with a line explaining what failed and why. If you file a claim, that record can go straight to your adjuster.

  3. 03

    Shingle and tile repair

We replace lifted and creased shingles and swap cracked or slipped tiles for matching profiles where they can be found. Torn underlayment beneath the tile is replaced too, since that layer is what actually keeps water out.

  4. 04

    Flashing, vents and edges

Bent flashing, loose pipe boots and torn drip edge are refastened or replaced to current code. These are the places wind grabs first.

  5. 05

    City inspection when needed

When a repair is large enough to need a permit, we pull it, schedule the city inspection and meet the inspector on site. You keep the signed-off record for your files.

  6. 06

    Gutters knocked loose

Branches and wind bend gutters and pull hangers free. We reset or straighten them during the repair, and our Gutters page covers full replacement.

Signs your roof took storm damage

  • Bits of shingle on the lawn

Just one or two pieces tell you the wind found a weak row, and the shingles next to it have often lifted too.

  • Shingle edges that sit high or show a crease

From the street, watch for tabs higher than the ones beside them or marked by a light line. That line means the seal let go and the shingle bent.

  • Tile that is cracked or out of line

A falling limb can crack concrete or clay tile, and strong wind can shift it. Any break in the pattern lets rain get to the underlayment.

  • A stain that wasn't there before

A water mark showing up with the first rain after a windstorm usually means a new opening. Our Roof Leak Repair page describes how we follow it back to the source.

  • Metal or vents that rattle

Flashing that flaps or a vent cap that bangs in the wind has lost its fasteners and will only get looser.

How a storm repair job runs

  1. 1

You call, we inspect for free

Let us know what you noticed and when the storm hit. We pick a time to visit, inspect the roof at no charge and photograph as we go.

  2. 2

A written estimate with code items

Your free written estimate lists each repair, any code upgrades the repaired areas require, and whether the city must sign off. Nothing is hidden in a single lump price.

  3. 3

Your claim, if you file one

We work directly with your insurance claim, giving the adjuster our photos and estimate and meeting them on the roof if asked. The adjuster makes the coverage call; we make sure they see all we found.

  4. 4

    The repair

We protect plants and walkways, take out only the damaged areas and rebuild them starting at the deck. Before leaving, we haul away debris and sweep the yard with a magnet for nails.

  5. 5

    Inspection and final approval

When the city inspects the work, we're on site for it. You receive final photos and the inspection record to file with your home papers.

What sets the price of a storm repair

We price storm work by what we find on the roof, so the free inspection happens first and the written price comes after. Two homes on one street can need very different repairs after the same wind. If the timing is hard, financing is available through Service Finance Company, subject to credit approval.

How widespread the damage is
A handful of lifted shingles is a quick fix. Damage across several slopes means more material, more labor and sometimes a city inspection.
What your roof is made of
Asphalt shingles match and replace faster. Tile needs more care, since each broken piece must come out without cracking the ones around it, and older profiles can be hard to locate.
Damage below the surface
Soft decking, torn underlayment or rot left by an older leak adds work. You see photos before we replace any decking.
City approval and code updates
Bigger repairs require a permit, and today's code may require new underlayment or flashing where we rebuild. Each of those appears as its own line so you can see it.

Storm damage questions we hear often

Should I file an insurance claim for this?

Not always. If the damage is minor, the repair may cost less than your deductible. We give you the estimate and photos first so you can decide with real numbers in front of you.

Will you deal with my insurance company?

Yes, we work directly with your claim. We send photos and a line-item estimate, and we meet the adjuster on your roof if they want. We do not decide coverage, and we will not promise you a claim will be approved.

Does a storm repair need a permit in Los Alamitos?

Small repairs usually do not. Rebuilding larger sections of roof generally does, and the city inspects the finished work. Your estimate tells you which applies, and we handle the paperwork and inspection if one is needed.

Who is doing the work on my roof?

We hold a C-39 roofing license, CSLB 1092407, so you are hiring a licensed roofing contractor you can look up with the state board. We work in English and Spanish, so se habla español.

Will the repaired area match the rest of my roof?

We match color and profile as closely as the market allows. On older or discontinued shingles and tile, an exact match is not always possible, and we tell you that before work starts so there are no surprises.
